Turistrat offer has available rural houses in 23 villages situated in five different regions of the north of Castellón inland: Alt Maestrat, Baix Maestrat, Els Ports, Alcalatén and Plana Alta.
These rural houses are situated either in mountain villages or near the Mediterranean. There are also typical large cottages which give you the opportunity of enjoying nature.
The inland part of Castellón offers a broad diversity of scenery:
The regions in the north are characterised by having a wild scenery with gullies and high mountains which anciently where grown up, but nowadays offer a spectacular view together with some small houses, which were used by shepherds, made only of stone. This architecture is very characteristic of El Maestrazgo.
These regions have a great nature heritage where you can find forests of ilex and pine trees with an extensive range of aromatic plants ( thyme, rosemary, lavender … ) and medicinal ones ( mint-tea, rock tea, camomile, …). We can also find in the different seasons of the year a broad variety of delicious mushrooms and truffles.
These regions have long-distance paths such as GR-7, -GR8 and GR-33 as well as short-distance ones which make easy the access to places of great nature interest such as the mountain Peñagolosa, which is at a height of 1813 m- the highest mountain of the Comunidad Valenciana.
The cave paintings of La Valltorta and La Gasulla are also of great interest- they have been declared as Mankind heritage by UNESCO.
Among the fauna of the zone, you can find the Hispanic goat, eagles, vultures, partridges, hares, wild boars, …
In areas of lower altitude, the climate is warmer, which makes possible the growing of hazel trees, almond trees, olive trees, vine as well as vegetable orchards.
We can emphasise the admirable specimens of millennial olive trees which you can find at the Bajo Maestrazgo.
We can also emphasise the nature parks and scenery of El Rivet, La Valltorta, La Serra D’Irta, Desierto de las Palmas in addition to excellent fountains of medicinal water in Benassal or Catí.
The gastronomy is also one of the most attractive things that these regions offer to visitors. It predominates in the exquisite dishes sheep, pork products, delicious sausages, meat tins, exquisite cured ham, cheese, game, stew, stock, etc..All of these dishes are elaborated with natural products. We can emphasise virgin olive oil, mushrooms, truffles, aromatic herbs …, and cakes are elaborated with almonds.
Craftwork, based on ancient jobs, still exists in the villages located in the interior of Castellón. We can emphasise textile craftwork, basketmaking, pottery, and carpentry.
